Galileo Chamber Choir—Rosa Mystica, Nov 19
On November 19, Galileo Chamber Choir presents Marian music from the 15th to 18th centuries with “Rosa Mystica.” The program includes a wide array of devotional music, from the luminous brilliance of Josquin des Prez to the opulent harmonies of Zelenka, and with works by Lassus, Monteverdi, Charpentier and others. The concert will culminate with Vivaldi’s colourful Magnificat, accompanied by a baroque ensemble featuring Karen Langille, Celeste Jankowski, Kirsty Money, Hilary Brown, and Neil Cockburn.
Galileo Chamber Choir, founded in 2018, is dedicated to the performance of Renaissance and Baroque music. Conductor Andrew Pickett holds an M.Mus. in voice from Western University and a graduate diploma from the Royal College of Music, and has studied with early music legends Emma Kirkby, James Bowman, and Michael Chance. He has performed chamber music and opera in Europe, Canada and the United States, and has been a member of numerous professional ensembles including the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir. Andrew now serves on the teaching faculty of the Halifax Institute of Traditional and Early Music.
The concert will take place Sunday, November 19, 7:30 pm at the historic St George’s Round Church, 2222 Brunswick St, Halifax (admission by donation, $20 suggested). “Rosa Mystica” will be the closing concert of the inaugural Halifax Early Music Festival, held from November 17–19 at St George’s, and also featuring Phoebe Durand-McDonnell, baroque harp (Friday, Nov. 17, 7:30 pm) and the HITEM Faculty Chamber Concert (Saturday, Nov. 18, 7:30 pm).
