NOVA SCOTIA YOUTH CHOIR 2017 CONCERT TOUR
LUNENBURG, TRURO and DARTMOUTH – The province’s most talented young choral singers will gather as the Nova Scotia Youth Choir, under the direction of guest conductor, Rachel Rensink-Hoff, to present concerts in LUNENBURG, TRURO and DARTMOUTH on September 23rd and 24th.
The Nova Scotia Youth Choir is a program of the Nova Scotia Choral Federation, and for 27 years, has been bringing choral excellence to the young singers of Nova Scotia. This program provides opportunity for singers ages 16-25 to work intensively on a wide variety of choral repertoire with some of the best choral instructors and directors in the field today.
The Nova Scotia Youth Choir is excited to present Listen to the Earth: an eclectic program that explores the four elements and one universe. The program will feature works from classic composers such J.S. Bach, Benjamin Britten and Palestrina as well as works from modern choral writers like Trent Worthington and Eric Whitacre.
Concerts will be Saturday, September 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at St. John’s Anglican Church, 64 Townsend Street, Lunenburg, (presented by Musique Royale) and on Sunday, September 24th at 2:00 p.m. at First United Church, 711 Prince Street, Truro, and at 7:30pm at Grace United Church, 70 King Street, Dartmouth, (presented by Grace United Church). They will be joined by resident conductors Ross Thompson, Christina Murray and accompanist Cynthia Davies.
Tickets are $20/$10 (students) for the Lunenburg concert, $20/$5 (students) for the Truro concert, and $15 for the Dartmouth performance.

About the Nova Scotia Youth Choir: A project of the Nova Scotia Choral Federation, the Nova Scotia Youth Choir is now in its 27th year. The objective of the choir is to provide choristers aged 16 to 25 with a challenging opportunity to work, develop and perform choral music together under the leadership of talented local educators and accomplished Canadian conductors. Forty-five auditioned singers from around the province have been selected to work with a team of fine musicians.
About Guest Conductor Dr. Rachel Rensink-Hoff: Dr. Rachel Rensink-Hoff is the newly appointed Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music Education at Brock University. She has also been named Artistic Director of the Niagara-based Avanti Chamber Singers. Rensick-Hoff is the former conductor of the McMaster University Choir and founder of the McMaster Women’s Choir. Prior to her appointment at McMaster University, she taught at The University of Western Ontario where she completed both her Masters in Choral Conducting Doctorate of Musical Arts, with additional choral studies at the Eastman School of Music Conducting Institute, the Voice Care Network of St. Johns University, Minnesota, and the University of Toronto. She has engaged in masterclasses under conductors Anton Armstrong, Helmuth Rilling, Joseph Flummerfelt, Dale Warland and the late Sir David Willcocks.
Past-President of Choirs Ontario and Vice-President of Programming for Choral Canada, Rachel is the 2014 winner of the prestigious Leslie Bell Prize for Choral Conducting awarded by the Ontario Arts Council. Under her direction, the McMaster choral program has steadily gained recognition in the Hamilton arts community and beyond for its inspired performances. In 2015, the McMaster Women’s Choir was awarded first prize in the 2015 National Canadian Choral Competition for Amateur Choirs of the CBC and Choral Canada. That same year she was nominated for the Excellence in Teaching Award at McMaster University. An active member of the McMaster Institute of Music and the Mind, her current areas of research include conducting gesture, empathy through singing, and Canadian choral music. She publishes regularly in the Choral Journal of the American Choral Directors’ Association as well as in Choral Canada’s Anacrusis and The Canadian Music Educator. She works frequently as guest conductor, adjudicator, conference presenter and workshop clinician. In March of 2017 she presented a session on the works of Canada’s female choral composers at the National Conference of the American Choral Director’s Association.
