Requiem, Dalhousie Chorus and Ora

April 2, 2023 @ 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM

$10 – $15

Directed by John Bogardus, Dalhousie Chorus & Ora presents

REQUIEMOld texts made new, a thousand years of reimagining.

April 2, 2023 | 7:30 PM

Joseph Strug Concert Hall, Dal Arts Centre, 1385 Seymour St. Halifax

The Fountain School of Performing Arts is producing a night of choral masterworks, Requiem, a thought-provoking look at a thousand years of composers reworking old and ancient texts. The Dalhousie Chorus and Ora, Dalhousie’s SA (soprano and alto) choir, will guide the listener through these timeless masterworks in the new Strug Concert Hall.

The repertoire for Requiem will begin with two contrasting works, one, a world premiere, by composer Jarred Miller and the second a work by Saint Hildegard of Bingen. The newest meets the oldest. Miller’s work will see the singers move through the new concert hall as they sing his stunning new setting of the Polish text Sto Lat. The evening will include many fascinating reworkings of ancient texts, including both Ola Gjeilo’s and James Rolfe’s recreations of music and text by Saint Hildegard paired with the original chants. Works by the Norwegian composer Kim André Arnesen and some rarer works by Fauré will round out the first half. The evening will culminate with the staggering setting of the Requiem text by Maurice Duruflé.

Join the Dalhousie Chorus and Ora on this journey through an evening of musically reimagining, reworking, and renewing the ancient.

The Dalhousie University Chorus is a collegiate choir (40-50 voices) comprised of music students from all idioms as well as experienced choral singers from other disciplines and occasionally the wider choral community. Excellence, innovation, and collaboration are the hallmarks of the Dalhousie Chorus and the music crosses all periods and genres. Concerts often feature other performers from the Fountain School of Performing Arts and the group has undertaken several community-centred collaborations.

Dalhousie’s Ora is a collegiate choir of soprano and alto voices comprised of music students from the Fountain School as well as students from the larger Dalhousie student body. This ensemble gives students the opportunity to experience a wealth of material written for only high voices.  This is a new initiative at the Fountain School and focuses particularly on the chamber skill singers develop from working with only a few voices per part in a chamber choir setting.
