The Secret Wisdom of Flowers – Aeolian Singers

April 29, 2023 @ 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

$10 – $25

“But I look up high, to see only the light. And never look down, to see my shadow.”
~ from Song of the Flower by Kahlil Gibran

Isn’t it amazing the life lessons that are held in watching roses growing against all odds through a crack in the sidewalk? Or bearing witness to the first wildflower pushing up out of scorched black earth?  Or the memories that surface in the annual release of the cherry blossoms?  What are the secrets that the Marigolds are hiding?

In “The Secret Wisdom of Flowers”, Edmonton composer Laura Hawley has brought together a collection of imaginative, beloved texts and poetry by Canadian and Indigenous authors such as Bliss Carman, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and E. Pauline Johnson.  The song cycle explores the perspective of flowers and plants offering an invitation to contemplate the messages, emotions, and wisdom each gem has to offer.

The Aeolians joined four other leading upper-voiced choirs across the country – Elektra Women’s Choir (Vancouver, BC), Nova Voce (Prince George, BC), Lady Cove Women’s Choir (St John’s, NL), and Oriana Women’s Choir (Toronto, ON)  to jointly commission this new multi-movement work for upper voices.

To complement Laura’s work, the rest of the repertoire continues in this theme.  Ramona Leungen’s “How the Blossoms Are Falling” evokes the passing of time and reminiscence, and the familiar Lakme Flower Duet “Dome Epais” can only be described as pure bliss.  Halifax composer Fran Farrell’s trilogy “A Rose By Any Other Name”, which was commissioned by the Aeolians during the pandemic, explores the truth of women through the image of a rose.  And finally, Erik Esenvalds’ “Song of the Flower” takes Kahlil Gibran’s poem from “The Prophet”, and brings it all full circle.
