Halifax Camerata Singers Look Up into the Heavens 2018-19 Season
“In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart….I see the world gradually being turned into a wilderness, I hear the ever approaching thunder, which will destroy us too. I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again.” (Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl, 1947).
A message of hope for humankind is the theme of Halifax Camerata Singers’ 2018-19 season (32nd) with concerts ranging from a choral work based on The Diary of Anne Frank to a multi-media presentation of music across the centuries reflecting the cosmos.
Artistic Director Jeff Joudrey said, “I’m very excited about this season and the moving music we’re presenting. This is our largest choir ever, with 29 members, and eight wonderful new singers. Our special guest in November, Jane Archibald, is someone I’ve known since her earliest singing days in Truro. As we think about the tremendous achievements of humankind, stretching even into outer space, we celebrate Anne Frank’s message of hope, peace and the innate goodness of people, through these emotional and beautiful pieces of music.”
The first performance is Annelies, a choral based on The Diary of Anne Frank by British composer James Whitbourn. It takes place at Shaar Shalom Synagogue (Pepperell at Oxford Streets) on Remembrance Day evening (Sunday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m.). This moving presentation stars Nova Scotia soprano Jane Archibald in the role of Anne Frank (whose full name was Annelies). Archibald will be joined by well-known Halifax musicians Jennifer Jones (violin), Shimon Walt (cello), Graham Lord (clarinet) and Camerata accompanist Lynette Wahlstrom (piano). The performance is sponsored by The Gilsig Series in Jewish Arts and Culture, the Charles and Mary MacLennan Foundation, with Jane Archibald’s performance supported by Christopher McKillop and a matching gift from Google.
On Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. Camerata will perform an a cappella concert, Music of the Spheres, at Paul O’Regan Hall, Halifax Central Library. This multi-media event will feature music from across the centuries, including works by Eric Whitacre, Ola Gjeilo, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Palestrina and Morten Lauridsen, as well as images taken from the Hubble telescope. Music and images will be tied together by a special guest narrator (to be announced).
The choir will once again perform as the core choir of the Symphony Nova Scotia Chorus in December for two performances of Handel’s Messiah. This year features the “Dublin” version of the perennial holiday favourite, conducted by Kevin Mallon with Hélène Brunet, (soprano); Marion Newman (mezzo-soprano); Michael Colvin, (tenor) and Alexander Dobson, (baritone). These concerts are on Friday and Saturday, December 21 and 22 in the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.
Camerata will also perform in Mozart’s magnificent Great Mass in c minor on May 4 and 5, 2019 in the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium with Jane Archibald (soprano), Allyson McHardy (mezzo-soprano), Kurt Streit (tenor) and Jon-Paul Décosse (baritone).
