Camerata Carolina at First Baptist Church – Mozart Concert (free admission)

Camerata Carolina from the University of Heidelberg is touring Nova Scotia with performances in Lunenburg, Wolfville and Halifax from September 23-29. Halifax performances (with two different programs) take place on Wednesday, September 25 at 7:30 p.m. in First Baptist Church (1300 Oxford Street, Halifax) and on Sunday, September 29 at 4:00 p.m. in the Cathedral Church of All Saints (1330 Cathedral Lane, Halifax).
With 40 members, the award-winning chamber choir belongs together with the Oratorio Choir Capella Carolina to Heidelberg University’s International Study Centre. Prof. Franz Wassermann, who is directing the Camerata Carolina, established both choirs and he is their conductor. Along with international touring, they also provide musical accompaniment for special university events and other festivities. In 2005 the choir gave the Armenian premiere of Brahms’ A German Requiem and they have performed repeatedly throughout Italy, Switzerland, Austria, France and Lithuania. The choir took home a Diploma in Gold from the World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia in 2014, having competed against 211 other choirs.
Camerata Carolina is passionately committed to the fine art of a capella singing. Critics are unanimous in their praise of the accuracy, luminosity and warmth of their musical character. They are known for championing little-known works, like the motets of Bernhard Klein and Otto Nicolai, and also their unswerving interest in contemporary music. They have made several recordings, and in Nova Scotia their program will focus on Mozart and his contemporaries.
Conductor Prof. Franz Wassermann received his musical education in Karlsruhe, Rome, Stuttgart and Trossingen from a variety of professors and mentors including Helmuth Rilling and Karl Boehm. He teaches at Heidelberg University and is a visiting professor in Canada, the US, Chile, Georgia, Armenia and Italy. He is also a guest conductor of the Georgian State Philharmonic Orchestra of Kutaisi the Armenian State Opera in Yerevan and the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra of Kaunas. He is also Vice-President of the Artistic Council of Germany Concert Choirs (VDKC).
Repertoire for the two Halifax performances (one at First Baptist Church, one at The Cathedral Church of All Saints) will include works by brothers Michael and Joseph Haydn, Mozart’s Viennese colleagues Reutter, Hofmann and Salieri, students of Mozart and his most admired musical forebears, Gregorio Allegri with his legendary Miserere and J.S. Bach. The choir will also perform Mozart’s magnificent double-choir motet, Venite populi.
