MUSIC OF A THOUSAND YEARS

THE CHOIR OF ALL SAINTS CATHEDRAL
Directed by PAUL HALLEY

The Cathedral Church of All Saints
1330 Cathedral Lane, Halifax, NS B3H 2Z1

‘PASSION: Music of A Thousand Years’ is a concert presentation with a millennium’s span of rich and beautiful choral music. The concert this year will take place in Halifax on Palm Sunday, March 24, 2024 at 4:00 pm at The Cathedral Church of All Saints. Directed by Paul Halley, The Choir of All Saints Cathedral will showcase choral works in a fluid choreography that surrounds the audience with powerful and ethereal music, sung from various locations within the magnificent landmark building.

Among the many a cappella musical gems in this year’s presentation will be Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei, (a marvelous transcription that Barber himself made from his famous Adagio for Strings), Arvo Pärt’s The Deer’s Cry and the second set of Tallis’ Lamentations of Jeremiah. (The choir sang the first set last year.) As before, the choir will make good use of the acoustic properties of the Cathedral as they move about the building and sing from various resonant locations. And Halley’s new choral/organ setting of the hymn tune Blaenwern, ‘Love Divine, All Loves Excelling’, will close the program.

The choice of Palm Sunday for this concert in the “Sundays At Four” series at the Cathedral is significant, as Palm Sunday is a pivotal moment in the season of Lent in the Church year. The formalizing of the season of Lent dates to the Council of Nicaea in 325 C.E. Since that time countless poets and composers have taken inspiration from the biblical narratives of the Passion, the Psalms, and Old Testament prophets, to create works of astonishing depth and beauty. The dramatic power of these texts has drawn out the most exquisite music from some of the greatest musicians over the last 1,000
years.

‘PASSION: Music of A Thousand Years’, 2024, takes place on Sunday, March 24, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. at the Cathedral Church of All Saints in Halifax. A single show is scheduled so audiences are advised to get tickets early. Last year’s concert sold out well in advance. Information and tickets may be found online at:
