Halifax Camerata Singers – Looking for Great Singers!
Halifax Camerata Singers is currently holding auditions for all voice parts for the 2017-18 season (31st season) for singers who have a solid vocal technique, good sight-reading skills and above average musical ability. Previous choral experience is a must. If you would like to be part of this dynamic choral ensemble please contact General Manager Peggy Walt at peggy@culturalaffairs.ca for more information.
The choir is under the direction of founding Artistic Director Jeff Joudrey, and forms the core of the Symphony Nova Scotia Chorus, who will be performing Handel’s Messiah in December, and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in the spring with SNS. Halifax Camerata Singers will also reprise their show commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion (December 3), present two remembrance-themed concerts in November with guests, Nova Voce, and present a concert with guest mezzo-soprano, Christianne Rushton, in March and June.
Halifax Camerata Singers is Atlantic Canada’s award-winning chamber choir, and rehearses weekly on Tuesday evenings at First Baptist Church, with additional rehearsals as required. Our 45th season of singing will begin Thursday September 14, 2017 and continue until late April of 2018 under the direction of our newly appointed director, Ryan Billington.
We welcome auditions from singers who find that they fit most of the following criteria:
•Singers with either little, some, or advanced training are welcome to audition.
•Experience singing in choral settings or ensemble settings in productions.
•Understanding of some basics of vocal technique or demonstrated vocal confidence in your audition performance.
•Openness to learning different styles of music in an ensemble setting.
Assets to the Chorale include:
•Commitment to rehearsals and performances.
•Willingness to study and learn concert music outside of rehearsal – independently or with rehearsal aids.
•Openness to learning new skills and expanding upon existing skills (vocal, aural, rhythm, reading, movement).
For the audition:
•Please prepare one or two selections showcasing your best performance.
•Be ready to experiment with your voice for a few minutes – this may involve some simple patterns across your range.
•We will work with you in reading a passage of music, and we will also test your aural skills.
•An accompanist can be provided. You may bring your own accompanist if you wish.

Aeolian Singers – Audition Now
The 2017-18 choral season, which begins at the end of August under the leadership of new Artistic Director, Heather Fraser.
Heather has an exciting season planned for the Aeolians, and you can learn more about the choir at www.aeoliansingers.ca (go to How to join the choir). Auditions will take place in June in Wolfville, Halifax and Dartmouth as follows:
• Saturday, June 10 at Acadia University, Denton Hall from 2:30 – 5:00 p.m.
• Monday, June 12 at Grace United Church in downtown Dartmouth from 5:30 – 9:00 p.m.
• Monday, June 19 at the NS Choral Federation office, Marginal Road, Halifax from 5:30 – 9:00 p.m.
• Saturday, June 24 at the NS Choral Federation office, Marginal Road, Halifax, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. if required.

Wanted: Choir to Perform @ the Bluenose Marathon
Every year CBC Nova Scotia is one of the sponsors of the Blue Nose Marathon. One of the things that we do is arrange to have some music on the route, as the runners are starting out. The participants tell us it means a lot and is inspiring to have a group singing to send them on their way. We look for a high energy ensemble. The choir would be needed for just a couple of hours at the most. It’s just a 5 k run/walk so it would be to cheer participants on as they head out and as they return. The choir will be mentioned on our Social Media platforms. They will also be part of our weekend wrap-up video. If they wish to have a sign stating who they are, they are welcome to do so. We can provide t-shirts unless they prefer to wear their own uniform/outfits. This is a voluntary performance although we can offer an honorarium of $250.
WHEN
The event is Saturday, May 20. The run begins at 2pm so the meeting time would be 1.30 pm to be in place.

The location is the corner of South Park and Bell Road (near the Garrison Grounds, across from the old CBC Building)

O Canada Choir
The O Canada Choir is a virtual choir and concert band performance of a new arrangement of O Canada. Individuals can download sheet music and mp3 accompaniment tracks from the website, and record themselves performing their own part. These individual performance videos will be combined into one grand performance for release on YouTube and other social media platforms. Please check out the introductory video and other links below.
Of note, the “O Canada Choir Project” is the subject of a research paper by Dr. Chris Cayari of Purdue University. Participants will have the opportunity to be involved in the academic study of community music creation using the internet.
