About the Cape Breton Chorale
The Cape Breton Chorale has been an important choral ensemble in Nova Scotia since 1973,
when Sr. Rita Clare (1933-2017) founded the choir. The choir has championed and premiered
well-known SATB choral arrangements of Cape Breton songs including Song for the Mira, We
Rise Again and others. For more information on our choir history and to hear our recordings:

Eligibility and Guidelines for Submission
This competition is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and landed immigrants
who are 35 years of age or younger. Submissions must not be previously commissioned,
performed, or published.

General
The work must be original, not an arrangement of an existing work. We encourage an individual
creative approach to choral writing that suits our ensemble well. The submissions will be
adjudicated by a panel from the Cape Breton Chorale organization.

Text
Composers should choose their own text, either a sacred text based on an aspect of the
Christmas tradition or one that expresses universal, seasonal, and/or holiday themes. Texts
must be approved for public performance and recording or be in the public domain. Composers
are responsible for securing permission from text copyright holders.

Length, Instrumentation, and Voicing

  • Submissions should be 3-6 minutes in length.
  • While there may be some a cappella sections, a piano accompaniment should be included.
  • Solo(s) for soprano, alto and/or tenor may be included.
  • SATB choir of approximately 40 singers. Soprano and Alto parts may include divisi.
  • An additional instrument part may be included.
  • Score Preparation
Scores must be clearly legible and may be handwritten or formatted with notation software.
Submissions should be presented in open score format, with accompaniment set below the
vocal parts. Closed score should only be used for sections with purely homophonic textures.
Instrument part(s), if applicable, should be included in the score above the vocal parts in
concert key. A separate instrument part in the correct instrument transposition must also be
    included.

Submission Instructions
There is no entry fee for this competition.
Include the composer’s name, contact information, and title of work in the body of the email.
Only the title of the work and text author (if different from composer) should be included as
part of any attached file.
Example: Christmas in Cape Breton.2023.pdf
The adjudication panel will see the anonymous scores. Composer identity will remain hidden
from the panel until after the selection has been made.
Submit the score, any applicable instrument part, and/or text sheet (translations are
appreciated, if applicable) of the completed work in PDF file format via email to the address
included below. Include a letter of permission for use of the text, if applicable.
The inclusion of a notation software demo recording (mp3 or wav format) is appreciated but
not required.

Please submit files to: info@capebretonchorale.com
Selection, Awards, Performance
The organization will identify the winning composer and notify them by phone and/or email on
or before November 1, 2023.

An honourable mention may be declared. In this case, we may ask the composer’s consent to
perform their piece in December 2023 along with the winning composition.
A live performance of the winning composition will take place on December 17, 2023. The
composer will receive a live recording of the piece within 60 days of the performance.

King’s Chorus – Section Lead Auditions

The King’s Chorus: Section Lead Positions

The King’s Chorus is the choral society of the University of King’s College, Halifax. We learn and rehearse major choral works from various traditions, and share what we’ve learned with the Halifax community in a concert each semester. The King’s Chorus is committed to fostering a supportive environment where singers of all levels can improve their musicality and enjoy themselves in the process. We sing challenging and beautiful music, and we make sure to have fun while we do, cultivating an inclusive and non-competitive atmosphere in which to participate.

Section Lead positions are awarded to professional singers in an annual application and audition process: one each of Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass. We meet on Wednesday evenings during the academic year from September to April. To apply as a Section Lead for the 2023/24 season, please send a musical resumé, specifying your choral voice part, to the Music Administrative Assistant, to whom questions about the positions may also be directed:

Unison Festival 2023- Festival Chorus Registration

In only three months, Halifax will be welcoming over 600 2SLGBTQIA+ choristers from all
across Canada for the 2023 Unison Festival. The Festival is being hosted by The Women Next
Door and the Halifax Gay Men’s Chorus, with support from the Nova Scotia Choral
Federation. From May 19-22, the city will be buzzing with the joy of a queer community
united in the magic of choral music! The weekend will feature a series of choral concerts,
workshops and social events that will bring the community together.

The theme of the Festival is Open Harbour, and in that spirit we want to welcome the local
2SLGBTQIA+ community and its allies to participate. The Closing Concert will feature our
three Festival Choruses, each with delegates drawn from the 17 2SLGBTQIA+ choruses
participating in the festival. Registration for a Festival Chorus is also open to the public and if
you’re a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community or an ally who loves to sing, we’d love to
have you!

Each of the three Festival Choruses (SSAA, SATB and TTBB) will be performing their own
repertoire, which will include the world premiere of newly commissioned pieces to help
raise awareness around the LGBT Purge in Canada. These pieces were commissioned by
Unison with the assistance of the LGBT Purge Fund. The Festival Choruses will be conducted
by some of Canada’s premiere choral conductors: Deirdre Kellerman (SSAA), Marg
Stubington (SATB) and Willi Zwozdesky (TTBB). More information about the repertoire of
each Festival Chorus will be posted on the Unison Festival Choruses page.

During the festival, rehearsals for the Festival Choruses will occur on Saturday, May 20 and
Sunday, May 21 from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Halifax Convention Centre. The Festival
Choruses will perform at the Closing Concert on Monday, May 22. There will be a tech
rehearsal in the morning so the expected time commitment is from 9:00am – 12:30pm. An
online rehearsal will be held prior to the festival and new registrants will have access to a
recording from a previous rehearsal. The cost of registration for a Festival Chorus is $50 and
can be done through the Festival Choruses page. Participants will also receive either a
rainbow tartan bow tie or bandana which will be part of the uniform for the concert.
If you are interested in participating in a Festival Chorus and are coming from out of town,
Unison has group rates available at several hotels in Halifax.

For more information about the 2023 Unison Festival, please visit the Unison website or contact

Halifax Camerata Singers invites applications for the part-time position of General Manager to deliver operational services required for the choir’s continued artistic success and financial viability. This is an independent contractor position, renewable annually, reporting to the Board Chair and working closely with the Artistic Director.

Working from a home office, the GM is responsible for the following types of tasks: Production and marketing (focusing primarily on usually two self-presented concerts each year as well as ongoing industry networking and community outreach)

Administration (including managing mail, files, preparing and obtaining signatures for contracts as needed, maintaining customer relationship management records, booking venues). Halifax Camerata Singers is Atlantic Canada’s premier chamber choir. The choir has won major awards, is featured regularly on CBC Radio, and forms the core of the Symphony Nova Scotia Chorus.

The position requires experience in arts management, an independent work ethic and a spirit for collaboration on a wide range of projects. The candidate should have a passion for choral music. The successful candidate must show evidence of the above qualities and experience. Candidates who can demonstrate the needed experience and skills can expect a starting rate of pay at $50/hour.
