The National Choral Census Needs You

IT IS FINALLY TIME! The National Choral Census is kicking off! We are SO excited to have this momentous and important project beginning next month! We have uchoirs-make-censussed the feedback from our choral community across the country to design a census that will give us information they asked for, and to create a true pi
cture of what choral music making looks like in Canada.
Now, the important bit – WE NEED VOLUNTEERS ASAP!

One part of the census is a short phone/email survey designed by our research company Hill Strategies Research Inc. and the Choral Canada Advocacy Committee and we need volunteers to make these calls. We are looking for 4-6 volunteers from each province and territory to call a list of randomly selected numbers in your region of the country, and ask a few simple questions about singing and involvement in choir to the person on the other end. These calls need to take place during a three-week window of November 8-30. You can divide up your time however you would like. Some of the calls will need to be made during the day when schools/businesses are open. Hill Strategies are approximating 6 hours per volunteer.

The first week of November volunteers will be contacted with all the detailed information they will need to know – a training document, a phone/email script, an excel spreadsheet for recording results and a list of people/organizations to contact. This can all be done in their own time, on their own phone, from the comfort of their own home. They just need a phone, and a computer/internet to do the data recording/sending of the information.

If you are interested, please contact me, Heather Fraser at hrfraser@gmail.com IMMEDIATELY or by October 27th. If you can’t help out yourself, please help us out by forwarding this message to your choirs, friends, other singers, … anyone you think might be willing to help us out! Time is of the essence!

You will be doing a great service to your choral community, at home and across the country! Many heartfelt thanks and we hope to hear from you soon!

Laurence Cole: Songwriting and the Art of Listening Workshop

The You Gotta Sing! Chorus is pleased to present Laurence Cole in workshop!

Thurs. Oct 27, 6:30 – 9:30 pm – St. Peter’s Anglican Church, 3 Dakin Dr., Halifax
What is your song? What story do you wish to tell through song? As humans in this ever changing world, we all have songs within – songs of joy and praise, songs of pain and sorrow, songs of celebration, revelation, and renewal. In this workshop, Laurence Cole will guide the group in a process of deep listening, to explore and call forth our own song within. There will be time together as a full group, as well as time in smaller clusters to connect more deeply with each other and our voice. We will explore the practice of mirroring, as we listen and witness the stories of our fellow participants. Together, through a process of listening, we will welcome the unfolding of new songs to be born.

This workshop is open to everyone. No song-writing or singing experience is required.

NOVA VOCE @ NIGHT – @NOCTURNE

nvnight

Back again after a year off Nova Voce is performing at  Nocturne . You can find us at Alderney Gate Library, 60 Alderney Drive from 7-10 pm.  It’s interesting to sing for an audience that isn’t seated and can move about and in a venue that isn’t our typical sort  performance space.  There is an intimacy and  an informality about these performances that lend a very different feeling to both the singers and the audience. Of course it’s also nice to look out and see many familiar faces.
Audiences will hear some of our favourite selections as well as some new repertoire we are enjoying.  Nocturne is a wonderful opportunity for us to expand our reach and we are excited to be performing on the Dartmouth waterfront this year.  Join us for a few songs between 7 and 10 pm.  It will be a great night for a ferry ride with lots to experience on both sides of the harbour!

We have another evoxpostxciting announcement for our 2016/2017 season on the theme of mental health! We are so thrilled to be working with Cy Giacomin, our first ever Composer-in-Residence! Not only does Cy bring his incredible composing/arranging skills to the VOX team, but he is also passionate about social change- something you know we love! We are so happy to welcome you to the family, Cy! 🙂

“I have always believed that choral music has the power to create meaningful, lasting change in the world. To put my music where my mouth is, I am thrilled to accept the role of Composer-in-Residence at VOX: A Choir for Social Change. I’m equally thrilled that VOX has partnered with the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, as both organizations have affected me personally. Several works are already in progress, and I look forward to collaborating with individual VOX members on their own works as well.

That’s all for now! Stay tuned for more details. VOX, I’m excited to find out what we can accomplish together. This will be my first-ever residency, so you will always be home to me.”
