It’s that time of year again. Your continued Membership and support helps us to do the work we do, from managing our significant choral library, to providing meaningful choral programs for people of all ages.

If you have not renewed your membership for this year, which runs September 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019, we encourage you to do so now.

Your membership ensures access to the NSCF Library, the ENotes Newsletter and our Events Calendar, and your Choir must renew to sign out music for the upcoming season.

Seeking Children’s or Youth Choir

Ernst & Young LLP seeks a Children or Youth Choir, 10 singers maximum, to perform the National Anthem at their Annual Entrepreneur of the Year Gala, taking place at the World Trade and Convention Centre on October 5, 2018, at 7:30 pm.

Chebucto Community Singers seek new members!

The Chebucto Community Singers are looking for new choir members. This is a mixed choir of 65 members and has enjoyed 44 years of making music together. They sing a broad range of repertoire from classical to Broadway.  The choir rehearses from 7-9 on Tuesdays at Oxford School, 6364 North Street, Halifax. The Choir Director, Louise Grinstead, would like anyone who may be interested in being a member of this choir to come to our first rehearsal of the year on September 25, between 6:15 and 6:45 for an audition. She is mostly looking for basses and tenors but will accept sopranos and altos who have choral experience. Those auditioning should have some experience in choral singing and be fluent sight readers or have a strong ear for music. CALL FOR APPLICANTS to lead MUSICIANSHIP at YOUTH CHOIR CAMP

We are in search of an individual to lead our musicianship classes at Youth Choir Camp.

This includes leading two 45 minute sessions daily Monday to Friday excluding Wednesday (1 class on Wed.) during the week, in which groups of singers will be lead through musical skill development.
The instructor will plan three 45 minute lecture sessions, which will be presented a total of 3 times each, that will focus on but are not limited to the following topics:


Ear Training
Sight reading
Music History
Conducting
Vocal improvisation
Audition preparation
Jazz Techniques
or other special topics

Applicants should have experience in leading large group instruction and have musical training relating to voice, theory, conducting, choral pedagogy or instruction.

Remuneration includes room and board if applicable and a payable fee.

NSCF seeks Sing Summer Camp Cook/Kitchen Supervisor

Sing Summer Camp Cook/Kitchen Supervisor
Berwick August 9-25

As kitchen supervisor and head cook, you will be leading a small team (2-3 cooks) 3-4 servers/dishwashers, ordering and maintaining stock/inventory within budget, preparing meals and overseeing the day to day running of the kitchen, including cleaning the equipment, checking supplies and rotating food stock. You’ll be responsible for catering to a limited number of special diets such as, vegetarian, celiac, and gluten free. Sing summer camps provide three meals a day for our clientele – breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as two evening events with cheese, crackers and vegetable and dip. It is a 16-day contract and room and board are provided on site. We are looking for somebody who is comfortable in a camp kitchen environment, a variety of equipment (camp) and who likes to be hands on.

Key responsibilities:

• Ordering and organizing the inventory storage

• Helping to plan menus, apportion ingredients and use food surpluses • Meal preparation and cooking

• Making sure the kitchen is a safe and hygienic place to work

• Managing the kitchen help 1-2 prep cooks and volunteer dishwashers and dining room servers

• Control portion costs by working out the number of portions per food batch

What sort of hours will I work?

This is a 17-day camp with 5 programs

• Program 1 (NSYC) will involve feeding up to 45 young adults three meals a day Friday to Sunday.

• Program 2 (CCW) adds up to 25 persons for meal times on Sunday and Monday morning breakfast.

• Program 3 Monday dinner to Saturday Lunch involves feeding up to 100 adults

• Program 4&5 Sunday dinner to Saturday Lunch involves two sittings for each mealtime with approximately 100 meals per sitting. There is a half hour between sittings and the clients are children and chaperones.

Experience

• Experience of working in a fast paced kitchen chef

• Some management experience will help

• Ability to multitask

Qualifications

• Health and safety or food hygiene qualifications are crucial

Others Requirements

• Ability to work long days and weekends

• Ability to work in fast paced environment

• Attention to details in work is important. • Food and safety certificate. – WHMIS certified

Summary: The Office Administrative Assistant is responsible for completing accounts receivable tasks, processing memberships, processing library loans (NSCF), registrations, providing administrative support to programs of the organizations.
Responsibilities:
• Receive memberships via telephone, mail or online; enter data into software; process payments and create receipts
• Receive registrations via telephone, mail or online; enter data into software; process payments and track all related tasks, coordinating with other departments as necessary

Skills
• Undergraduate degree or diploma in administration

Nova Scotia Youth Choir 2017 Staff Announced

We are excited to announce 2017 will be Rachel Rensink-Hoff will be joining us as Guest Conductor for NSYC 2017 and Christina Murray  will join Ross Thompson as a Resident Conductor.  Audition Registrations for the 2017 choir will soon be announced.  Dates can be found on the NSYC page of the NSCF website.

The rehearsals for the tour weekend will take place in HRM this year and the concert weekend will once again feature a three concert tour!

 

Dr. Rachel Rensink-Hoff

Dr. Rachel Rensink-Hoff is Assistant Professor of music and director of choirs at McMaster University, where she teaches courses in conducting, vocal-choral pedagogy and music education. She is condin-selecteductor of the McMaster University Choir and founding conductor of both the Women’s Choir and Chamber Choir. Prior to her appointment at McMaster, she taught at The University of Western Ontario where she completed both her Doctora
te in Music and Masters in Choral Conducting, with additional choral studies at the Eastman School of Music Conducting Institute, the Voice Care Network of St. Johns University, Minnesota, and the University of Toronto. She has engaged in masterclasses under conductors Anton Armstrong, Helmuth Rilling, Joseph Flummerfelt, Dale Warland and the late Sir David Willcocks.

Past-President of Choirs Ontario and Vice-President of Programming for Choral Canada, Rachel is the 2014 winner of the prestigious Leslie Bell Prize for Choral Conducting awarded by the Ontario Arts Council. Under her direction, the McMaster choral program has steadily gained recognition in the Hamilton arts community and beyond for its inspired performances. In 2015, her McMaster Women’s Choir was awarded first prize in the 2015 National Canadian Choral Competition for Amateur Choirs of the CBC and Choral Canada. That same year she was also nominated for the Excellence in Teaching Award at McMaster University. An active member of the McMaster Institute of Music and the Mind, her current areas of research include conducting gesture, empathy through singing, and Canadian choral music. She publishes regularly in the Choral Journal of the American Choral Directors’ Association as well as in Choral Canada’s Anacrusis and The Canadian Music Educator. She works frequently as guest conductor, adjudicator, conference presenter and workshop clinician. In March of 2017 she presents a session on the works of Canada’s female choral composers at the National Conference of the American Choral Director’s Association.

 

Christina Murray

Christina Murray is a choral conductor and vocal pedagogue based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She approaches her conducting practice through the voice and is widely known for her award-winning and innovative work as artistic director of Xara Choral Theatre Ensemble. She is also the director of the Dalhousie University Chorus and conducts the Bay Chorale, a joyful community choir in the Peggy’s Cove area.

Christina holds an honours undergraduate degree in music (voice/conducting) and philosophy from Mount Allison University, has done graduate work in feminist liturgical practices, and has subsequently studied conducting with Diane Loomer, Jon Washburn, Michael Zaugg, and Elise Bradley. Also an active and accomplished choral singer, as a young person she was selected for two tours with the National Youth Choir of Canada and she now sings with the Canadian Chamber Choir.

Christina served as head of choral studies at Kodaikanal International School in South India from 2002-2004 and was resident conductor of the Nova Scotia Youth Choir in 2005 and 2006. Today, she lives in Boutilier’s Point with her spouse, her baby son, Phinean, and their two dogs.
